frequently asked questions ...

1. What is the difference between Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science?

Electrical and computer engineers work on designing computers as well as systems in which computers control events in the physical world or manipulate representations of the physical world. Electrical and computer engineers are involved in both the development of the hardware (CPUs, memory, integrated circuits, disk drives, monitors, input/output controllers, peripherals, etc...) for computer systems and the software to operate these systems. Electrical and computer engineers have an in-depth knowledge of how a computer system works down to the transistor level. Furthermore, electrical and computer engineers are involved in many diverse fields such as communication systems, networking, health care systems, automotive electronics, satellite systems, image processing, music, etc.

2. Do I need to bring my own personal computer?

No. The ECE Department has a networked computer cluster that is available to all ECE students. All the programs that you will need for engineering and general education courses are on the computer systems. The ECE cluster is open 86 hours/week, including evenings and weekends. Printing facilities are provided at no cost.

For students who wish to bring their own personal computer systems many of the engineering analysis programs are available in student versions and may be purchased at the Durham Book Exchange. All of the dorms have network connections in each room.

3. Will I have time to become involved in sports and extra curricular activities if I study electrical and computer engineering at UNH?

Yes, we encourage our students to become involved in campus life. Many of our students are on varsity and intramural sports teams; belong to clubs, organizations, and special interest groups; or are members of UNH's 11 fraternities (men's chapters) and five sororities (women's chapters). For a listing of current student activities go to UNH Admissions - University of New Hampshire - Campus Life.

4. How do I arrange a visit to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department?

We encourage students and their families to visit the ECE Department to meet the faculty and see our educational and research laboratories. Tours are usually arranged through UNH's Office of Admissions. The Office of Admissions will provide a general tour of the University and arrange for a tour of the ECE Department. You may also contact the ECE Department directly to schedule a tour of our facilities.

5. Are there opportunities to work in UNH's research laboratories?

Yes, most definitely. Many of our undergraduate and graduate students help support their education and gain valuable engineering experience working in UNH research laboratories.
